Faster, longer, crazier! 10 world records for cycling

"Do you know when the world's first bicycle race was held?  It was the moment the world's second bicycle was made."

Ever since the invention of bicycles, riders have been obsessed with breaking records, from the distance travelled in an hour to the time it took to travel around the world.  Riders are constantly pushing their physical and mental limits to go faster and farther.

 1. World record in one hour

 In the game

It is one of the most famous world records in cycling, with the previous record set in 1876 at 26.508km and the latest set by Wiggins in 2015 at 54.526km.  The women's world record is 47.890km set by Evelyn.

 2. How far can I cycle on a platform in a minute?

Not many people have tried to break the record, and even fewer have been certified.  In 2009, Miguel Angel Castro tried his hand at cycling on a platform, eventually cycling 2,040 meters in one minute. In 2015, he broke his own record again, cycling 3,060 meters in one minute.

 3. The number of miles covered in a year

Back in 1939, Tommy Godwin set the world record by cycling 120,800 km in one year. In 2015, American Kurt Seavogel broke the world record by cycling 122,342.7 km, an average of 334 km per day.  In May 2016, Amanda Coker set out to break the world record.  She cycled 139,269 kilometers in one year, averaging 380 kilometers a day.  Amanda didn't stop there, but continued to ride, setting a record for the shortest time in 10,000 miles -- 423 days.

 4. Across the Continent from north to south

In 2015, Lee Fancourt cycled 6,760 kilometers from Norway to the southernmost part of Europe in 21 days, 14 hours and 23 minutes, beating the previous record by a full day.

 5. Mountain bike swamp diving

It's a bizarre project as it sounds.  Granham Robinson's time of 51 minutes and 37 seconds on a track in Wales is the fastest.

6. Climb altitude within 48 hours

Climbing the height of Mount Everest in 24 hours became popular in two years.  In 2015, American Craig Cannon, a keen cyclist, climbed 29,623.3 meters in 48 hours and soon broke his own world record of 31,874.3 meters.

 7. Longest distance underwater cycling

In 2013, German Jens Stotzner cycled 6,708m underwater, 78 times at the bottom of a swimming pool.

 9. Travel the world

Mark Beaumont, who cycled 29,020km around the world in 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes, passing through 16 countries and setting two Guinness World Records.

 9. 24-hour cycling distance

Austrian rider Christoph Strasser set another world record in the same two years by cycling 941.873 km in 24 hours in the track velocimeter, covering 3,767 laps of the 250-meter course.  The average speed was 39.42 kilometers per hour.  He also holds the world record for distance cycled outdoors in 24 hours, at 896.173km.

 10. The fastest "bike" ever

What's the fastest speed a bicycle can go?  The record is 334 kilometers per hour.  But this was done on the platform.  Bruce Bursford started at 160 km/h on the bike platform and rode to 334 km/h.  Bruce had planned to try for the world record on the road, but he was killed in a training accident and failed to do so.
